Tired of looking at grey skies? Tired of wearing heavy sweaters, coats and mittens? Longing to get away? Easter break is the perfect time! And if you’re on a budget, or just don’t want to spend a fortune on your getaway, consider these five frugal Easter break ideas.
1. Be extremely flexible. You can find amazing packages on budget travel sites, and even on airline websites, if you are flexible about when you leave, where you go and when you return. The more flexible you are, the more options you have and the better chance you have at finding a package that fits your budget.
For example, a visit to the website of a major airline resulted in a round trip flight and four night’s stay in Hawaii for just over $900 per person. Rather go to Cancun? How about $834 per person and kids stay free?!
If you’re open to go to any number of locations and you have wiggle room with your departure and arrival times and dates, you can find great vacation packages.
2. House swap. There are websites devoted to helping people travel on the cheap and one of the concepts that’s gaining recognition and acceptance is the home swapping idea. You visit one of the websites and list your home as a place you’re willing to swap, and you also list places you’d like to travel to. Interested parties who live in those locations will contact you and you can make arrangements.
This completely eliminates the cost of a hotel, which is often the most expensive part of a vacation. Of course there is some risk involved in giving strangers access to your home. However, there are safeguards you can put into place to minimize the risks and people have been traveling this way successfully for years.
3. Book hot spots early. If you’re looking to go to a hot spot during your Easter Break, look to book your reservations right now. Often, the earlier you make your plans and book your reservations, the cheaper it is. Once the dates draw closer, the rates, particularly the airfare, will go up quite substantially.
4. Be willing to go someplace different. Rather than head to Cancun for Easter break, consider traveling to a lesser known or traveled to destination. For example, Portland or Seattle, San Francisco, or even Toronto or Chicago. These are not high travel destinations during Easter break; however, you can have a lot of fun in a new big city and you can do it on a budget.
5. Find an empty cruise cabin at the last minute. Cruises like to fill up their ships, and empty cabins are almost given away. And again, if you are flexible about where you’re going and when you travel, it will provide you with more options and a cheaper cost.
If you have the urge to travel and get out of town during Easter break, don’t let a tight budget get in your way. You can travel frugally during this upcoming holiday.
