Appliance Stimulus Packages and Rebates

Whether you need to replace a broken down appliance or you are simply looking for some updates to the energy efficiency or look of your home, there could be an appliance rebate available to you.
Most people have heard of the Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program that was included as part of the federal government’s stimulus package and administered by the US Department of Energy. This program was divided up among the states to handle as they saw fit, assuming the usage was first approved by the DOE.
Every US state and territory has or has had a form of this stimulus package, but many have already closed. You can check to see if your state’s rebate is still available at the DOE’s website, www.EnergySavers.gov.
Even if you are out of luck on the stimulus package, you may find other rebates are available in your area. Most of these are rebates offered by utility companies or appliance manufacturers to update your appliance to a more energy efficient one. A comprehensive list by zip code can be found at the Energy Star website, www.EnergyStar.gov. You can also check on your state’s website or your local energy provider’s website, and ask about rebates at your appliance store.
Typical appliances covered under both federal and private rebates include furnaces, heat pumps, central air conditioning units, hot water heaters, dishwashers, washing machines, refrigerators and solar energy systems.
Most of the appliances included under any of these rebates must be Energy Star rated appliances. Energy Star ratings simply mean that a particular appliance model has been tested and approved through a joint program by the US Environmental Protection Agency and the DOE. It may or may not be as “good” of an appliance but it will generally use 10-20% less energy than an equivalent non-Energy Star rated appliance.
You can cut the cost of your new appliances with a little bit of research before choosing a model. Federal, state and private rebates exist to encourage you to purchase appliances that will decrease the energy consumed. It’s a great time to move up with your appliance and to save yourself not only money through rebates and decreased energy bills, but to also do your part in protecting our environment.
